The statement at the head of Tracy Kidder's March 1982 article
that some applications of solar energy are the only demonstrated long term
source energy is misleading.
The breeder reactor, as pioneered by the French, is a demonstrated
practical source of long term power. While its costs are larger than that
of light water reactors, so that it may not be much used as long as there
is enough uranium so that it doesn't have to be used efficiently, they are
less than double the light water reactor costs. Therefore, it provides an
"existence proof" of a long term solution of our energy problems even if
better solutions may turn up.
